New book examines ground water in narrative format

March 22, 2017  By Administrator

Ground water authority William M. Alley and science writer Rosemarie Alley have teamed up on a new book that explores issues around ground water and sounds the call to protect the vital resource.

In High and Dry: Meeting the Challenges of the World’s Growing Dependence on Groundwater the authors consider the growing global population, widespread use of industrial chemicals and climate change and the threat these factors pose to ground water.

Ground water depletion and contamination has spread from isolated areas to many countries throughout the world, the authors argue. Drawing on examples from around the world, including case studies in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Sub-Saharan Africa, they examine ground water from key scientific and socioeconomic perspectives.

The 304-page book includes stories of people who are making a difference in protecting this critical resource.

William Alley is a hydrology expert and director of science and technology for the National Ground Water Association and Rosemarie Alley is a veteran science writer. They previously coauthored the book Too Hot to Touch, on nuclear waste.

The book, published by Yale University Press, is available in hardcover as as a Kindle download.
