Canadian desalination pipe design finalist for LAGI award

Santa Monica, CA – A Vancouver engineering firm’s solar-powered desalination pipe design is a finalist in the Land Art Generator Initiative.

The Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) promotes public art design solutions for sustainable energy infrastructure. It is inspired by the Santa Monica Urban Runoff Recycling Facility (SMURFF), which teaches vistors about stormwater, water-borne particulate, filtaration, and large-scale rainwater reuse.

The Pipe uses photovoltaic panels to power its facilities and filters water by electromagnetic desalination to generate 10,000 MWh and 4.5 billion litres of drinking water annually. It was designed by Abdolaziz Khalili and Associates, a Vancouver engineering firm specializing in liquid processing facilities. According to its proposal, the Pipe “offsets its construction cost and initial environmental footprint, as a self-sustaining, water purification unit providing drinkable water for the city.”
