Cottage owners urged to take climate adaptation measures

Ontario – The Federation of Ontario Cottage Owners is encouraging waterfront property owners to consider the effects of climate change in the care of their properties.

“Shorelines that are well adapted to new and changing conditions will be better able to meet your management goals as you build a more sustainable future for your waterfront property,” says a report entitled Managing Your Waterfront Property in a Changing Climate.

The report outlines five actions cottage owners can take to mitigate the negative effects of climate change:

  • Keep your shoreline natural and enhance it if possible
  • Keep aquatic plant populations intact
  • Maintain and improve your waterfront property’s health and biodiversity
  • Manage pests and disease
  • Stay informed through FOCA’s free monthly newsletter.
