Lakes in the world’s Arctic regions, including in Canada, Alaska, Russia, Greenland, and Scandinavia, are drying up which is contrary to predictions suggesting they would expand due to melting ice. Researchers from the University of Florida say Arctic lakes are “vanishing.” The affected lakes are an important source of freshwater for Indigenous communities and industries. The decline of northern lakes comes as a surprise to scientists who speculated melting ice would allow lakes to expand before drying up in the middle of this century or the next one.
