A lack of trade-specific data limits conversations with employers about the benefits of essential skills to anecdotes, said the CAF-FCA in its latest newsletter. Since employers care about the bottom line, this lack of evidence-based information related to essential skills is problematic. To fill this gap, CAF-FCA explored essential skills training in the skilled trades environment by conducting a two-phase survey among skilled trades employers. The purpose of the study was to determine the percentage of employers providing formal essential skills training and the costs and benefits of this training.

This study builds upon CAF-FCA’s past work by substantiating the business case for training while also trying to provide new insights about essential skills. This research aims to help stakeholders have more informed conversations with employers about the return on training investment associated with essential skills.
