California wells drying up at alarming rate as drought continues to deepen in West

Fairmead, Calif. – Heavy pumping is depleting underground aquifers in the American West as drought levels continue to deepen. Rural communities are losing access to groundwater and more than 1,200 wells in California have dried up this year – an almost 50 per cent increase over the same period in 2021.
