California’s groundwater crisis a wake-up call for Canada, says Saskatchewan water scientist
State has less than 20 years to reach sustainability goals

The groundwater depletion rate in California has sped up so much of late that the resource could disappear over the next several decades. The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act has given the state’s groundwater management districts less than 20 years to achieve sustainability goals. The University of Saskatchewan’s Dr. Jay Famiglietti, a renowned water scientist, says, “All around the world, we have been kicking the can down the road for a long time on effectively managing groundwater.
