Is groundwater at risk from what is buried in cemeteries? It’s a question that hasn’t prompted much in the way of research, but some studies suggest a risk exists. In 2021, about 4.5 million gallons of embalming fluid entered the ground in U.S. cemeteries. This is on top of chemicals from varnished wood caskets and other pollutants related to burials.
