Discoloured tap water should be on the way out in Renfrew, Ont. with new treatment system
System will keep manganese in check and keep tap water clear

Renfrew, Ont. – Residents of this Ottawa-area town may be down to their final season of having to deal with brown-tinted tap water.
Council has approved a $508,798 bid for a new water treatment system to be constructed that would remove manganese from the municipal water supply. It’s been determined that manganese leeched from the Bonnechere Riverbed for the off-coloured tap water.
Design costs and a $50,000 contingency fund are expected to put the total amount about $19,000 over budget, but it’s expected to be covered by the town’s water fund reserve.
It’s expected the manganese will be dissolved through the addition of potassium permanganate. The treatment will be used only as necessary to prevent water from turning pink in colour.
