‘Earthy’ taste of Pointe-Claire’s drinking water caused by algae; still safe to drink

Refrigerating water will reduce taste, smell

August 4, 2022  By Ground Water Canada

Montreal – Pointe-Claire residents have noticed an “earthy” taste in their drinking water of late, but it’s nothing to be concerned about, the municipality says.

The taste and associated odour are the result of algae growth.

A notice posted on Pointe-Claire’s website has informed residents that the algae is being treated but the unusual taste may persist a while longer until water circulating in the system is renewed.

The city says the situation poses no health threat and that the taste and smell can be reduced by storing water pitchers in the refrigerator.

The summer and fall seasons are typically when algae growth peaks occur.
