NGWA offers free online primer on nitrate in drinking water

about nitrate in drinking water and what to do about it is available to
household water well owners on the NGWA website.

about nitrate in drinking water and what to do about it is available to
household water well owners on the NGWA website.

The online lesson, which was developed with support from the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete and
includes short pre- and post-lesson quizzes. Well owners who successfully
complete both quizzes will receive a Certificate of Completion signifying that
they possess some basic knowledge about the subject.

It is available at www.WellOwner.org .

“Given the heightened concern in Minnesota about nitrate in
well water due to some new research on the subject, this lesson is especially
timely as it provides some important information that all water well owners
should know – regardless of where they reside,” said Cliff Treyens, NGWA public
awareness director, in a news release. "The 15 minutes or so required to
take this lesson is time well spent.”

The lesson covers the following points about nitrate:

• what it is
• where it comes from
• how it enters a private well water supply
• determining the risk
• options for treating it in well water

There is no cost for the lesson, but well owners wishing to
take it must register, which enables NGWA to e-mail the Certificate of
Completion to persons successfully completing both quizzes.
