Federal budget includes $398M to support Indigenous areas’ water infrastructure
2021 boil-water advisories target came up short
April 8, 2022 By Ground Water Canada
Ottawa – The federal government’s 2022 budget, announced yesterday, noted drinking water issues in Indigenous communities are improving, even though the goal of lifting all long-term boil-water advisories failed to hit the 2021 target.
Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) noted 131 long-term advisories have been lifted over the past seven years, but 34 still remain. The government has earmarked $398 million to ISC over two years to support community infrastructure on reserve.
Of that amount, about $247 million will be put toward water and wastewater infrastructure.
The budget didn’t include the class-action suit amount of $8 billion concerning long-term, on-reserve boil-water advisories.
