Groundwater monitoring part of environmental assessment at former fairgrounds property

Toxic chemicals reportedly spread underground at Belleville location

Belleville, Ont. – Additional groundwater monitoring will be part of the second phase of an environmental assessment at a former fairgrounds property here.

Belleville city council approved the assessment’s second phase on Tuesday.

Toxic chemicals were reported at the fairgrounds location and were said to have spread underground from the neighbouring Nortel building.

The former fairgrounds site is planned to accommodate a new YMCA Centre for Life, an upgraded curling club and new residential and commercial buildings.
