Manmade wetlands aren’t the same as those created by nature, naturalist says

Developer plans to build new wetland upon bulldozing existing marsh

Stoney Creek, Ont. – Wetlands, which act as sponges to hold and purify water and help replenish groundwater, are much more effective when they are created by nature, a retired naturalist with the Hamilton Conservation Authority says. He takes exception with a developer’s plan to bulldoze a marsh for the provision of a warehouse. The developer also plans to dig a new wetland adjacent to the property, but naturalist Bruce Mackenzie says that existing wildlife, fungi and organic matter can’t be moved.
