New Orleans-area residents say municipal officials were tardy in addressing seawater issue

New Orleans – Remedial efforts to address the issue of saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico into the freshwater Mississippi River began too late, local residents contend. They blame municipal officials for not taking action when the seawater pushing against the river had originally begun. The intrusion has largely been caused by drought that has lessened the flow of the Mississippi to the point where it’s been unable to push back against the incoming seawater.
