Westerville, OH – The National Ground Water Association will mark the 20th anniversary of National Groundwater Awareness Week (#GWAW) March 10-16.
An annual observance established in 1999 to highlight the responsible development, management, and use of ground water, the event is also a platform to encourage yearly water well testing and well maintenance to prevent waterborne illnesses, the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) said in a news release.
“This year’s theme, Think, was designed to urge each of us to consider various ways we can protect our most valuable natural resource,” NGWA said. “So Think about not running the water while you brush your teeth. Or Think about getting that leaking faucet fixed. Think about the farmers that rely on ground water to grow the food we eat. And Think about having your well inspected to protect your drinking water system. In short, during #GWAW Think about our future.”
“Ground water is used for irrigation, livestock, manufacturing, mining, thermoelectric power, and several additional purposes, making it one of the most widely used and valuable natural resources we have,” said Aaron Martin, marketing director of NGWA. “Although groundwater is out of sight, it certainly should not be out of mind, which is why we’re prompting folks to Think about how they use and protect the resource before, during, and after Groundwater Awareness Week.”
NGWA encourages every person to be a “groundwater protector” during National Groundwater Awareness Week by signing up on wellowner.org. Businesses, individuals, educators, students, federal agencies, cities, and associations alike can simply add their name to a growing list of participants from around the country. Participants are also encouraged to share their ground water protection/awareness efforts through our website or on social media, some of which will be shared by NGWA throughout #GWAW.
