Ontario raises water-bottling fee to $500.71 per million litres

Toronto – Ontario will be charging water bottling companies an additional $500 fee to take ground water.
Beginning Aug. 1, 2017, water bottlers will pay $503.71 for every million litres of ground water taken, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change said in a news release. The new fee will help recover costs associated with managing ground water taken by water bottlers, including supporting scientific research on the environmental impacts as well as more detailed data analysis on ground water taken for water bottling.
The province has put several other protections in place for ground water: a moratorium until Jan. 1, 2019, on all new and expanded permits to take water from ground water sources for water bottling; new, stricter rules for renewals of existing bottled water permits; further research to ensure long-term water protection; and engaging Indigenous partners, communities and industry on changes to water quantity management practices.
