Quarry withdraws application to fill pit that had activists riled since 2018 in Port Colborne

Fear of aquifer contamination was at forefront

Port Colborne, Ont. – Port Colborne Quarries has abandoned its permit application to refill an empty pit with “clean inert fill.” The application was originally made in 2018, but was met with opposition by local environmental activists who claimed a lack of soil testing could have allowed the fill to be less than clean. Scrutiny from both municipal and provincial groups tied down the process until the application was finally withdrawn this month.
