Raw sewage released into river prompts drinking water advisory from local health unit

Sewage flow exceeds system's capacity

Kawartha Lakes, Ont. – Raw sewage is being released into the Fenelon River from higher-than-normal sewage flows triggered by extreme wet weather and wastewater amounts that have exceeded capacity at the Fenelon Falls Wastewater System. Consequently, residents drawing their water downstream from the Colborne Street sewage pumping station are being urged to use precautions before consuming water.

The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District (HKPR) Health Unit warns bacteria, viruses and parasites from contaminated surface water can cause illness. Surface water should be properly treated through a proper filtration and disinfection system before drinking.

The municipal water system connecting homes and businesses is not affected.
