Hilton Head Island – Six of the island’s original 12 drinking water wells have been overcome by salty Atlantic seawater, forcing their abandonment. Saltwater has been migrating westward from the ocean at a rate of 400 feet per year, impacting groundwater reserves that had once been secure. Because saltwater is denser than freshwater, it remains beneath freshwater in water tables but, as freshwater volumes decrease, it is displaced by saltwater. U.S. states are finally taking action.
