Selenium from B.C. coal mining operation creates binational drinking water concern

Elk Valley, B.C. – Metallurgical coal mining operations in the area are posing a significant risk to local waterways. Blasting is releasing selenium into rivers and streams, among other contaminants, putting drinking water sources at risk. Making matters even more controversial is the fact that selenium is being carried into Lake Koocanusa which crosses the U.S. border, creating a situation of binational concern.
