CEMA unveils ground water portal

Aug. 28, 2012, Fort McMurray, Alta. – The Cumulative Environmental
Management Association (CEMA) has unveiled a new ground water
information portal on its website.

Aug. 28, 2012, Fort McMurray, Alta. – The Cumulative Environmental
Management Association (CEMA) has unveiled a new ground water
information portal on its website. The web-based information includes a
ground water story board presentation, providing a breakdown of
information (what is ground water, what is an aquifer and ground water
and the oil sands) and a plain language document explaining ground water
( "Groundwater 101") with a strong oil sands context (mining and in-situ).

"CEMA is very pleased to release this up to date information pertaining
to ground water in the oilsands region. The portal includes highly
visual easily accessible content (story boards, video), as well as a
more complex written report," said Doug Geller, co-chair of the
Groundwater Working Group (GWWG).

"By working through the CEMA
multi-stakeholder process, our Groundwater Working Group has compiled
credible, technically accurate information about ground water and its
uses in northeastern Alberta. The portal is intended to be a source of
information that also serves to stimulate broadened interest and
discussion on groundwater and related water management issues in the
oil sands region," said Dustin Shauer, another of the co-chairs.

The Groundwater Working Group was established by CEMA in June 2011 to
address management of cumulative effects of industrial development on
the functioning of groundwater systems in the Regional Municipality of
Wood Buffalo (RMWB). The GWWG addresses ground water-related issues
and develop strategies or management plans.
