Subsidence data shows declining groundwater levels from unregulated pumping contributing to sinking of California areas
San Jose sunk 14 feet over 85 years

California – Historically unmonitored and unregulated groundwater pumping in California has led to declining groundwater levels throughout the state. Subsidence data indicates that groundwater extraction in the San Joaquin Valley has cost about $756 million in damages over the years.
