The year-round implications of salting roads during the winter

Newmarket, Ont. – Salting roads to eliminate ice during the winter months successfully reduces the number of traffic accidents, but it also leads to high chloride concentrations in drinking water supplies and can lead to the corrosion of private and municipal wells and pipes. Lauren Lawson, a PhD student at the University of Toronto, has written an opinion piece that looks at the effects of road salt on water supplies, suggesting we need to look at the year-round impact of salt and not simply focus on the winter months.
