Yu receives NGWA award for excellence in science and engineering

Westerville, OH – Dr. Zhongbo Yu of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has received the John Hem Award for Excellence in Science & Engineering from the National Ground Water Association.
The John Hem Award, which honours significant scientific or engineering contributions to the understanding of ground water, will be presented at the 2015 Groundwater Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dec. 15-17.
Yu was nominated specifically for a body of nine modern works on distributed hydrologic process modelling at the watershed scale.
“A leading international scholar in this area, Yu’s work is considered of particular academic significance not only in understanding how ground water and surface water move in large basins, but also in providing useful tools to explore uncertainty and parameter scaling,” the association said in a news release.
“Dr. Yu’s research by many measures is extraordinary,” said University of Waterloo Professor Edward A. Sudicky, Ph.D., FCAE, FRSC, who nominated Yu. “Dr. Yu has taken advantage of the research opportunities in his home country, and has contributed enormously to developing the research capabilities of young Chinese students and academics.”
One of Yu’s mentors, Dr. Frank Schwartz of Ohio State University, called Yu a “math whiz” with exceptional strength in discovering impactful problems and in developing innovative computer strategies to solve them.
“I appreciate his audacious approaches to science. Years ago, he said, ‘Frank…I want to create a distributed model of the United States.’ Sure enough, he went out and did it,” said Schwartz.
Overall, Yu has published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles.
