Skilled trades and technology week kicks off

Oct. 29, 2014, Ottawa – Skills/Compétences Canada is
officially launching National Skilled Trades and Technology Week on Nov. 4, at Algonquin
College in Ottawa.

officially launching National Skilled Trades and Technology Week on Nov. 4, at Algonquin
College in Ottawa.

Keynote Speakers include Executive Chef Jonathan Korecki,
contestant from the hit show Top Chef,
and executive chef at Ottawa’s esteemed SideDoor restaurant, and Mike Holmes
Jr., star of the hit HGTV show Holmes
Makes it Right.

 

This event is designed to generate awareness of the
opportunities in skilled trades for students, educators and industry. Young
skilled trade students from local schools will participate in interactive
Try-A-Trade and Technology activities hosted by educators and industry experts.
Algonquin College will be hosting labs on sheet metal, carpentry, hairstyling,
aesthetics and motive power.

 

Keynote speakers

  • Chef Jonathan Korecki, competitor on Shaw’s hit show Top
    Chef and Executive Chef at SideDoor restaurant in Ottawa’s historic Byward
    Market
  • Mike Holmes Jr., star of the hit show Holmes Makes it Right
  • Shaun Thorson, CEO of Skills/Compétences Canada
  • Donavon Elliott, Past President of Skills/Compétences Canada
  • Cheryl Jensen, President and CEO of Algonquin College

 

Schedule

8:00 – 9:30 a.m. – Media interviews and photo opportunities

9:30 – 10:00 a.m. – Official program with keynote speakers

10:00 – 12:15 a.m. – Students will participate in
interactive Try-A-Trade and Technology activities

12:30 – 2:45 p.m. – Students will participate in interactive
Try-A-Trade and Technology activities
