Desert-focused ground water monitoring project awarded by ESA to Blue-Value

Netherlands –A feasibility study to develop an integrated monitoring and control service to help customers in desert areas manage ground water resources has been awarded to the consortium Blue-Value by the European Space Agency.
The Blue Desert Project was announced during the Amsterdam International Water Week on Nov. 1.
Using IoT sensor data and satellite imagery, and infrastructure information, Blue-Value’s software delivers real-time insight into water usage, quality and environmental effects through a web application and mobile phone app, Blue-Value said in a news release.
The integrated software solution enables services such as automated well monitoring, water abstraction metering and remote water pump control. According to Blue-Value, the software will increase revenues for water authorities and decrease non-revenue water for utilities, enable farmers, miners, constructors and other users of water to manage quantity and quality.
Associates of the project are the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre; Thuraya Satellites of the United Arab Emirates; SamTech Middle East of the United Arab Emirates; and the Netherlands Space Office. The consortium has received expressions of interest from leading hydro-engineering firms including Royal HaskoningDHV and Witteveen+Bos from the Netherlands, as well as water sensor manufacturers.
