Montreal-area mayors say ‘no’ to plans for nuclear waste site, fearing water contamination

Montreal – A group of mayors from the Montreal area oppose the development of a permanent nuclear waste disposal site in Chalk River, Ont., saying they fear the contamination of a valuable source of drinking water for millions of people. Maja Vodanovic, mayor of the borough of Lachine, acknowledged that although nuclear energy doesn’t generate greenhouse gases to the same extent as oil, the waste it generates is dangerous.
