bit options keep rigs boring in through different soil types and geotechnical
and geothermal applications.
Step drag bits, which come standard with all of the
company’s rigs, are designed to drill quickly through clay, sand and medium
hard formations. “The hardness of the bits makes them last long and retain a
sharp cutting edge,” said Joe Haynes, president of Little Beaver, which
manufactures Lone Star Drills, in a news release.
Step drag bits come in four sizes: 3-7/8 inch, 4-1/2 inch,
5-7/8 inch and 7 inch sizes, with the carbide mounted on a 5/8-inch steel plate
to deliver strength and durability, and the carbide face allows for easy sharpening.
When necessary, a driller can pair a bit with a reamer, also
called a hole opener, to enlarge the borehole to the appropriate size for the
casing pipe. The reamers come in five sizes: 5-7/8, 7, 8, 9 and 10 inches.
Roller cone bits, also known as tricones, break through
tough soils and rock easily due to tungsten carbide inserts, which last longer
than steel-based products. The bits feature three carbide-studded wheels with
bearings that spin as the bit turns. Roller cone bits typically come in either
a closed-bearing or open-bearing design. Lone Star roller cone bits offers the
more economical open-bearing option. Users can choose from 3-7/8 inch or 5-7/8
inch sizes.
PDC bits feature polycrystalline diamond compact cutters
that are asymmetrically balanced to drill precise round holes and reduce bit
whirl. They cut with a scraping action against the rocks as the cutter turns,
which minimizes plugging to achieve maximum penetration rates, particularly in
medium rock formations such as granite and sandstone. PDC bits come in 3-7/8
inch or 5-7/8 inch sizes.
Claw bits are the ideal bit for the most challenging clay
formations. The bit features three fingers that produce a ripping action as
they dig in and loosen the soil, which reduces over-torqueing and stalling. Designed
with fingers for durability and longevity, the bits can be replaced once worn. They
come in 3-7/8 inch and 5-7/8 inch sizes.
The bits are connected to the drill pipe via the M250
thread, which is square and 2-1/2 inches in diameter. The M250 thread, which is
exclusive to Lone Star Drills, allows for a larger through hole to improve
mudflow. The roller cone, PDC and claw bits are also available with American
Petroleum Institute thread, an industry standard that is 2-3/8 inch in diameter
for the 3-7/8 inch bit sizes and 3-1/2 inch for the 5-7/8 inch bits.
