U.S. commits $1 billion toward toxic cleanup work at Great Lakes hot spots
Funding to speed up work that began in 1987

U.S. President Joe Biden has pledged $1 billion to clean up toxins in the Great Lakes, at harbours and tributary rivers with industrial contaminants. The funding is aimed to speed up work that began in 1987 at 22 sites deemed to be the most degraded. The Great Lakes provide drinking water for about 40 million people in North America who live in eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.
