Remediation of groundwater contamination increases cost of housing construction project
Volatile organic compound standards exceeded
March 1, 2022 By Ground Water Canada
Brantford, Ont. – Construction of a 26-unit affordable housing unit in the city has been delayed following the discovery of both groundwater and soil contamination. The contaminated soil has since been remediated, since contamination was first discovered in June, but studies suggest the groundwater exceeds Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks standards for volatile organic compounds. The price tag for what was originally a $5.5-million project has been adjusted to $6.3 million, which includes $500,000 in contamination remediation costs and $278,000 in construction delay costs.
