Scientific research team advocates greater legal protection for groundwater ecosystems
Researchers regard groundwater as keystone ecosystem

Groundwater should be treated as a keystone ecosystem, an international team of researchers has concluded. Professor Robert Reinecke of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, an earth system modeling specialist, said groundwater is relevant to earth’s ecosystems. About half of the earth’s population in urban settings are reliant on groundwater for their supply of drinking water.
