Edmonton – The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is being sued by the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN), alleging negligence following tailings leaks at Imperial Oil’s Kearl facility. The AFCN cited a failure to live up to Treaty obligations after two major leaks between May 2022 and February 2023. Documents suggest the Kearl oilsands mine was seeping tailings into groundwater.
