U of Waterloo researcher says amounts must be reduced by 25 per cent over next five years

Waterloo, Ont. – Researchers from the University of Waterloo say reductions in winter road salt use must be stepped up to protect groundwater and lakes in Ontario. Salt is an effective means to keep paved surfaces clear of ice, but once it gets into groundwater and surface water, it increases water salinity and depletes water of oxygen. Researcher Philippe Van Cappellen says municipalities must strive to reduce salt use by 25 per cent over the next five years. CBC News report | READ MORE
